Ask yourself the ? that how many of your picks will be there at the end as premium keepers. 10 at the v. best I would think. 30 trades isn't enough to upgrade it to a good competitive side in my view. Having said that, I like your picks of Duryea and Gibbs, maybe take one of Anderson and Wells.
Just my opinion, wont dissuade you.

Interesting Jaca - why do you say that for Boyd and McVeigh?

    Changes made already, version 2.

DEF- Bartel, KK, Yeo, Langdon, M Brown, Hartley (Collins x2)
MID- Fyfe, Ablett, Pendles, Rockliff, T Mitchell, Libba, Simpkin, Gore (Kerridge, Cuningham, Marcon)
    RUCK- Mumford, Lobbe (M King)
FWD- D Martin, Barlow, S Gray, Bird, J Anderson, Petracca (Pickett, Adams)

Convinced by the Tom Mitchell chat in other threads plus I've had him in my team for 90% of his career.

Thanks for the feedback. That's why I put the team up. Sometimes you just need another set of eyes. I have dropped off Salem (for a rookie if I can find one during NAB) and also Anderson for a rookie. Leaves me 390K to play with. Of the team that I posted above I expect (hope) that the following are keepers:

    D: D3 Kolodjashni, D4 Rich, D5 Smith, D6 Duryea,
    M: M1 Fyfe, M2 Pendlebury, M3 Ablett, M5 Rockliff, M7Gibbs, M8 Libba,
    F: F2 Martin, F3 Rioli, M4 Edwards, M6 Motlop

Would be interested to hear of others considered these players keepers in those positions?

390k to play with...upgrade KK and Rich. Don't leave that much in the bank! 50 k max for rookie corrections, whatever in the first two rounds. Get Bartel and Simpson in there. Side look much better.

Why do I say that? Would I rather have Goldy at 600k or Shaw at 500? Probably Goldy.

McVeigh is more expensive than Wines, Boyd similar price to Selwood/Sloane/Titch etc. Who do I back to score more? Where does the money make sense?

imo with all the fwd/back rookies this year, you can almost compare fwd and back keepers this year in an x vs y scenario, they almost become a like for like. not really keen on many backs so far

I'm really keen to see which rookies emerge as the "must haves" during Pre season. I thinks this will really help us decide how to balance up the Def and Fwd lines re keepers/rookies. I would love to run with 5 rookies in Def, but not quite confident of that yet.

Even with your forward line premiums carry risk with Libba coming back how will that effect him & Bennell who knows..could do anything.
Thanks yakka. I'll have another go tonight. There just seems like there is so much uncertainty in everything this season. There were quite a few breakout players last season which has me worried about whether they can back it up. A lot of the safer options are getting on a bit or too expensive. And with so many good mid-priced players are we going to miss out if we don't jump on them?

The following scores are the benchmark for a player just scraping into a "second XXII" (16th best averaging mid, 4th ruck, 12th forward and def) over the last four years:

    Def 91, mid 109, ruck 106, forward 96.

If a player doesn't have a record of at least one season of scoring at those levels or above, and generally playing 19+ games, I wouldn't consider them a solid keeper choice. That's how I'm thinking about it, in any case.

Using that rule would potentially exclude KK, Rich, Duryea, Gibbs, Edwards and Motlop. I reckon some of these players might work out for you, but a majority of these types of picks generally won't.

If you picked the 2-3 of those you liked least, downgraded them to rookies, and used the cash to upgrade most or all of the rest of the six to names who normally play 19+ and outscore the benchmarks above by at least five (you don't really want marginal picks without a strong reason) I'd say your team would be looking a lot more solid. Good luck.

Thanks Jaca - I see what you mean, especially in a relative sense. I'd say McVeigh and Boyd don't look amazing value more because so many mids are cheap, than because the two defs are overpriced per se, but nonetheless the dollars are probably better spent in the mids.

I guess it's just a balance thing (given the cash generation in the rookie mids) that is preventing everyone from really stacking that line. It's a worthy and interesting point nonetheless, thanks for clarifying.

More for context than a review, I'm currently sat with:
    D: 2 premo's and Smith
M: 5 top class guns and Libba
    R: Goldy(!) and Nic Nat
    F: Martin + 3 at/below 500k

Yeah I somewhat disagree. Only picking one breakout candidate Ie Yeo, the rest are all fallen premiums

The only "must upgrade" of players between 250-450k is Leuey. So +1
There is a possibility one of the big three midfielders will average 105 and could be M8 or maybe more while providing valuable points early. So say I trade 2. (3 total)
Yeo holds the generic position for a 90+ breakout backman. Im not sold on Laird (just assuming he will get more midfield time).
Barlow is risky but even if he has another poor year he will still be a forward keeper. The rest i cant really see why they will fail bar injury.
Selwood, Rocky, Sloane are all in my mind defiantly going to average 110+. Rocky 125, Selwood 115 and Sloane 115 i don't think is unreasonable.
My 450Kish midprices are all lowish risk because of they fail or repeat last years form it is not devastating (kinda like jack newnes last year). All i think have big upside and could average 10-15 higher than last year.

not saying they will all defiantly work but i dont think I would need really any significant amount more unless they are all genuinely bad picks and fail.

Liber, O'Meara, Crouch, Luey, Yeo, Smith, Greene. I concur that one or two may be keepers. Just seems a few too many risks for me. Hope it goes well.

Good to see a coach defend his/her team with a bit of venom.
