Are there rookies with opportunity....eg Worpel or are there too many other developed bodies in front of him.

Surely there is an opportunity for an SC scoring spike for one of the hawks mids at least...

    Thoughts?
Hawthorn don't generally throw first year players in there very often, but Worpel is definitely one to watch. I don't think his body will be an issue, he was already up to standard in that regard as a junior. He went from projecting as a top pick in 2016 to being drafted in the 3rd round due to concerns over his upside and disposal, but at the very least should be able to match what Langford can do (which isn't much most of the time).

Few interesting comments from CD on some mids
    https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl...e9064f080721d3

    Zach Merrett (Essendon)

Ranked above average for midfielders. He rated elite for disposals, uncontested possessions and metres gained, though his kick rating was below average.

    Joel Selwood (Geelong)

Ranked above average for midfielders. He rated elite for contested possessions and clearances, but recorded the second-fewest goals of his career last year and the third-fewest assists.

    Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs)

Ranked above average for midfielders. He rated elite for goals and increased his tackle numbers, but dropped slightly in disposals and rated only average

I'm very bullish on Worpel. Did a lot of good things for the Falcons, and knows how to find the ball. Locked in my midfield.

Excluding Danger, Oliver and Fyfe, if I was to give you $1,200,000 to spend on two midfielders, which two would you choose?

Few pretty good combos out there, Titch & Cripps Would have to be pretty high up the list. Any of Sloane/Crouch/Zorko/Zerett & Pendles probably close behind.

Titch + Cripps first, Zorko + Pendles second for me.

    Prefer Titch over Dusty, mate?

Yeah mate, mostly for bye reasons, but Dusty tends to have a few lean games most years. With the amazing year he had last year we were still able to get him for not much more than 500k at one point.

Titch just goes about his business and gets his 30+ each week without researching it I'd wager there's a much smaller deviation in his scores week to week.

You are indeed correct. Of all the players that scored 100+ last year, the 5 lowest standard deviations were Duncan, Hurley, Cotchin, Mitchell and Oliver (all with standard deviations of about 18-19).

The most amazing of those is Oliver, as he managed a low S.D. despite scoring a 170 towards the end of the year. Remove that score and his S.D. drops to 14 (incredibly consistent).

Titch is pretty much locked in my team, and I understand the point about Dusty’s Value dropping... but Richmond have a very easy first half of the season.

For bye reasons I'd actually go Dusty over Titch. Dusty has the final bye so you can't upgrade around his bye but with Titch you can.
Fwiw I'm unlikely to start either but would look to trade in Dusty if he has a lean patch.

I should have mentioned that I currently have both in my starting side. Though Dusty is there at the expense of Heeney. I don't think you can go wrong either way to be fair. Inevitably one will end up having scored more but I can't split them. 12-14 weeks is a long time to go without 2 of the likely top 5 scorers over the season if you're looking to hold off until post bye to get them in.

Pendles and Selwood for me. And personally, I'd consider using the extra cash to upgrade Oliver (although I assume you know what you're doing there).

Oliver to go 120+ this year. You heard it here first.

Crouch- unbelievable back half of season, low risk of tag. Reminds of Rockliff leading into 2014.
Bont- I expect if Dogs can get healthy he’ll play the SC friendly role we want.

Oliver's DE% is already 'elite' of the midfield premium group, one of the best actually.

I agree that he has scope to improve slightly on his TOG% with time and scoring involvements will provide the necessary uplift needed for his scoring output.

The other facet of his game where he could get 'instant' improvement is in his K to HB ratio. Of the top line midfielder, he is the only one to have a single digit K average count. Considering that he's a 26 possessions player through his young career (30 last year), that's a little on the low side for now.

Edit: Just going through his stats now for the write up!

Is Liberatore SC relevant any more? A few seasons ago he was a 110 midfielder. Since Luke Lemonade has taken over that has dropped away. Is it the different role? Is it the attitude? He is on the wrong side of the coach? Priced at 79 if he played a full midfield role could he get back to 100+?

He'll never get his old role back. McCartney just kept him following the ball and smashing opponents into the turf.
