Which defenders will you be picking next year? My current thoughts are starting Laird, Williams and Sicily.

Sadly for all the wrong reasons, the only defender I can be 100% certain on right now is Docherty!

Unless there is a bolter it's hard to see the backline deciding 2018. 6 blokes who play each week or a bit of value would make me happy.

At this early stage Laird, Hibberd and Yeo locked then maybe McGrath.

I think Simpson could be worth a look if he looks like benefiting from Gibbs and Docherty being out but i suspect they might want to look for someone younger instead. Any blues supporters got a gut feel about what might happen?

If by some miracle Blakely is DPP he'd be the number one lock in my team. Sicily's late season form in defence has me pretty tempted and at the moment I'm picking him.

What do you mean, your boys in Sutcliffe and Sheridan have decided past seasons for me...unfortunately they decided them negatively and cost me a couple of trades and any chance at the big prize

If i was to take a stab at a defender breaking out outside of McGrath, it would probably be Witherden who looked to play a pretty fantasy friendly type role last year and will probably see some midfield time next year. Second year blues and his starting price will likely scare most off but he'd be the one i'd be taking a risk on as he showed he can get plenty of it and use it quite well.

I don't think either will make/break your season but they could give you a nice little jump on the pack if you spend the loose change well.

I was thinking Witherden as well. He didn't get much press because he missed the first half of the year but what he did was pretty special for a first year player. The only first year players I can think of that scored better are Jaeger O'Meara and Toby Greene who were both playing as first choice mids in expansion teams. He scored more than Selwood, Fyfe, Pendles, Dusty and Danger.

There is a bit of support for Sicily in defence but he should get D/F and depending on who gets M/F I might be tempted to start him forward and have a Freo D/F floating donut in defence to switch him back if required. Uber where are you....

The forward line will probably be worse than the backline so I could be inclined to play Sicily forward and put Laird in the backline. There are lots of questions that exist for the defenders such how does Hurley go if Hooker moves back, how will Hibberd go with Lever, how does Laird go without Smith and Lever (he'll probably benefit), how does Williams go without Wilson (he'll probably benefit).

Interesting - I feel way more positive about the forwards this year particularly if heeney and Robbie Gray are in there

gray is guaranteed as a forward and Heeney is seemingly confirmed. I had Gray locked in until Rocky got brought in, which I think will make him play more time forward and reduce his scores. Heeney and Billings are the only premium forwards I really like.

Simpson is an interesting one ... a player I always liked, and so consistent but now getting on. Are you thinking he scores better with Doc out?

This was my first thought when i saw his name. Carlton play a very sc friendly game for whoever ends up playing behind the ball. If it is Simmo, i reckon i'll jump on as well as he's a pretty consistent and durable 90+ type even if he doesn't go 100+.

Hanley has me a bit interested at the moment.

Finished the year with 90, 119, 100, 87, 105 @ 100.2 and had 20+ touches in each game playing as a rebounding back. Gaz and Saad gone which can't hurt his scoring ability and has a decent scoring history (86, 87, 104, 96, 91 last 5). Has missed a lot of footy in 2 of the last 3 years though which hasn't been the case for most of his career.

Anyone else considering him at D4?

Sounds like we have had similar thoughts. Without having a great understanding of the Blues setup, my understanding was that they had multiple high scorers playing in those roles last year, so it wasn't just one role to go around, if you will. From memory there isn't any real sample to go off of games that Doc has missed since he broke out, so we are largely speculating in terms of his impact.

I am an outside chance to pick Simpson, but was wondering if there might be another Blue with more upside.
