I'm seeing quite a few teams with Brandon Ah Chee in them. I just don't see what others are seeing in him. Nothing to suggest that he's going to break-out based on his 1st three seasons and was not a high possession winning mid as a Jnr if I recall correctly. He may or may not get more midfield time at WCE even with a few openings for midfielders on that list. Can't see him averaging enough to be a keeper or making enough money as a stepping stone. There will probably be a handful of cheap rookies who will score as well if not better.

I can only feel 100% comfortable starting these type picks if I think there's a chance(no matter how slim) they could in fact score at keeper type level for their position, or close to. Especially when you start to get into the 300k region. I've always maintained if your starting anyone whose price starts with a 3 ,you really need to have a very good reason because more of these type picks will ultimately fail than succeed.
So I have to agree with Bomber18 above and say No to all but Harley Bennell. Who if gets thru the preseason unscathed will be as close to a lock as anyone for me.

There's a lot to like from Essendon this year with Parish, McGrath and Smith mid pricers I'm seriously considering and Hurley and Merrett genuine premiums. At this point I'm picking none of them but that could change.

Just one to watch in the NAB. 255k is still a rookie price. Not looking for a big "breakout" average, just around 80 at that price to push him to 400k.
Appeal is similar to WHE last year or Dom Tyson ages ago - chance to fill a midfield hole!

At this stage, unlikely to start any ess players (unless a rookie pops up). Smith/Parish will need to average close to 100 this year to be a top 6 fwd - too risky this season. Better midfield value than Merrett. Hurley just too pricey. Will target both as trade in options however. Essendon have the "good" bye.

I’m looking at McGrath with hope of turning him and a rookie into a quick premium upgrade & Daniher for a fun ride because I love watching him and I think he will continue to improve.
I agree Merrett & Hurley are a bit on the pricey side so will be looking to bring them in at a later stage.

Hurley def a no go. Pretty sure he is havin an interrupted pre season. Plus the inclusion of Stringer would likely mean Hooker goes back?

Is Danger at 749k is too dear? I’ve seen heaps of teams not starting him.

Also, Hurley might be a lock for me. Steady, consistent scoring this year. I think Hooker will stay forward (as much as I think he is a back man) so Hurley should have free reign and will rack up a lot of points from kick ins

I think there's better value in the discounted premiums category than this midpricer bracket.

Rocky, Hanners, Cripps, Coniglio, Gawn, Nic Nat. Treloar about 50k less than last season.
Docherty out for the year also saves you like 100k which you otherwise would've had to spend at some point.

Thanks folks, some interesting thoughts. Mine at this stage are as follows, and I'm assessing most of these players as stepping cows, so my main focus is whether they can outscore their price by 30+, ideally 40 or more:

Birchall: likely. I have considered him as a potential premium starter in previous years, at this price I think he's probably too good to miss as a stepping cow.

Seedsman: no for me. I was interested in him on the basis Herbie mentioned, but he really hasn't shown great scoring capacity.

Day: no for me. Is cheap, but has a poor scoring history.

Griffen: yes. Consistently averages 90+ and is durable. Priced at 50, so should be a strong stepping cow and M8/last upgrade.

Ah Chee: possible. In my side for now, but only because I've been persuaded to keep him as a placeholder. Will need to play mid in the JLT and score well. Does have a number of attributes that worked well for me last year - at/just above rookie price, but an experienced player who has had a few preseasons, and moved to a club for a potentially well-defined and more favourable role.

Armitage: unlikely. Had one spike year, otherwise averages a little low to make good cash given his price, and won't be a premium. Could do worse, but would probably be better off with a rookie, unless there is an extra $200k to spare at lockout.

O'Meara: unlikely. Slightly dear, and obviously injury prone. Did poorly on his return last year and probably didn't show enough to have confidence in him. Could be persuaded if he kills it in the JLT.

Bennell: yes, for exactly the reason Bomber mentions. If you could somehow know he'd play 22 games, I'd consider him at double his price, so the plan would simply be to ride him until he breaks.

Deledio: likely. Surprised there is not a bit more interest in him, I believe he was the highest priced forward two years ago. Is getting on, but a genuine premium candidate as I see it, and could still make good cash if he gets injured mid-year. Has gone 100+ many times, and finished last year with a 96 and a 92 after a couple of lower scores on return.

Rioli: no. A low 90s scorer is probably a bit low to be a good stepping cow at his price, and not quite at premium level either. Injury prone too. Similar to Armitage.

Christensen: no. Doesn't have a great scoring record and I've never really liked/rated him as a player, so I think I'd be really annoyed with myself if I picked him and he did poorly. Would need to show a fair bit for me to change my mind, but will keep an eye on his preseason.

You can be certain that whoever wins SC next year would've have started at least a couple of these players but the only problem is figuring out which one. Having a heap of them is just asking for trouble but having none means you're probably playing it too safe with not enough risk/upside in your starting team.

At this stage, i'm only planning to start 2 of these guys and will most likely go with 1 if rookies present.

Anyone seen more history around Lobb without Mumford, more than the two games last year (101 and 64). As a ruck you would expect he should score well, just looking to see if any data that makes it overwhelming.

Actually there were only 2 games where he was the no. 1 ruck and they were the two finals where he scored 108 and 129. The thing that's sold him to me is that he's no.1 in the league for hit out to advantage percentage and no.1 for centre clearance percentage of all the top 125 ruck attendees this year. He might be rucking against the 2nd best ruckman at times but that is still saying something. I haven't seen other games where he shouldered the ruck duties but given he's their no. 1 ruck next year he's worth the risk

Lobb only seems to be classified as Fwd only. Am I reading that right?

Yeah he must have rucked slightly too little for dual positioning, what counts is that GWS have said he will be their ruckman next year.

So your happy to roll with a Ruck as a Fwd only Option? I don't think CD will change his position from what is shown in the Gold picker.

i mean it doesn't matter if he's a forward as long as he plays ruck in the games

This is what I'm looking at as a first draft I'm reasonably happy with:

Laird, Hibberd, Howe, Birchall, Smith J, Collins (Murphy D-F Johnson)

Fyfe, Pendles, Selwood, Hanners, Rocky, Griffen, Ah Chee M-F, Davies-Uniacke (Freeman, Wigg, Brown M-F)

    Gawn, NicNat (Frampton R-F)

Heeney M-F, Gray, Dahl M-F, Lids, Bennell, Ahern M-F (Rioli, Garlett M-F)

    Thoughts welcome!

Anyone got any thoughts on C Petracca as a fwd?
