    Hello all,

Welcome to the 2018 edition of X vs Y. This is always one of my favourite threads, especially when it comes to making tough decisions on players, or testing an idea with other coaches.

For those of you that are new to X vs Y, it’s very simple. You tell us all the player, or combination of players, that you can’t choose between. For example:

    Nic Nat vs Gawn
    Or
Laird, Coniglio and R.Griffen vs Z.Merrett, Bontempelli and D6 Rookie

Then sit back, and enjoy getting awesome useful feedback.

    I’ll kick us off.

    Nic Nat (R2) + Delideo (F4) vs Ceglar (R2) + Billings (F2)

I think option the first option, Nic Nat and Deledio. Just not sure Ceglar will play for the Hawks, to start the year at least given that McEvoy is coming of a brilliant year.
I'm not totally convinced with Deledio though, but feel out of the two options the first is the best.

Was just thinking about X v Y's last night, so this is really great timing.

There are some interesting options in the $600k range. Please rank the following in your order of preference:

Oliver $612.8k - does he continue to significantly improve, or drop back this year?
Zorko $608.9k - I feel this is about his level, but with Rocky leaving is there room to improve?
    M.Crouch $608.3k - any further upside?
    Z.Merrett $600.6k - any further upside?

All of these guy's played either 21 or 22 games last season

I suspect Oliver will drop off slightly, potentially being tagged in 2 or 3 games if he continues to dominate. Also hard to maintain such high contested numbers over several years (even JPK has failed to maintain a jump in average).

Zorko will surely drop off at some point given he's not a permanent midfielder. Don't see him improving at this age, so not worth the risk.

M Crouch has room for improvement if he can maintain Tom Mitchell like numbers (which he produced in the back-half of 2017) throughout the whole 2018 season.

Z Merrett is a bit vulnerable to the tag as a more outside player, but is at the perfect age for a jump to 115ish.

I'd go 1. Crouch as he won't be tagged with Sloane in the side, 2. Merrett, 3. Oliver, 4. Zorko

    1. Zerrett
    2. Oliver
    3. Crouch
    4. Zorko

Zerrett could improve his inside game and be like Titch. Oliver, it’s hard to know. Has the most upside but probably the most downside too. Crouch seems like a less effective Sam Mitchell, needs to impact more to be considered. Zorko coming off career best years,
I reckon we’ve seen his ceiling.

The first option, but I think you'll find Bennell, Christensen, Ah Chee and Rioli are all better options than Deledio, who may not even be best 22.

If Zerrett can improve his DT:SC average he'd become an SC elite. Two years at 117DT but SC around 110, if he can ever go at 1:1, he'd be the top pick.

He got tagged a couple of times last year and still scored alright, that's a plus also.

Zerrett is an interesting one. I had him last year and remember being a bit disappointed with him. I was actually surprised he averaged 109, but when I look back at his scores I can see that he only averaged 97 for the last 5 rounds and scored under 100 on 9 occasions during the year. I think it is these low scores which is the source of my disappointment because while he can pump out some big scores, I really hate my premo's going under 100 and I reckon 9 times is way too many.

Heeney went under 90 on 9 occasions, but his low scores weren't as low as Budddy (although his ceiling isn't as high either). If it wansn't for the surgery, I think I would prefer Heeny for the consistency and expected natural improvement, but the surgery is a concern for me. I will watch his Pre season with interest to see how he has recovered from this.

Swans at full strength could be the reason but I was interested in this article when doing some research on Heeney for my forward line selections. The effects of glandular fever can be long term. But another preseason interrupted by an operation is the last thing he wanted.
