    Calling for expressions of interest.

Please read all 3 posts, especially the third post, as there is a slight change to this years Tontine Skins.

Opening post from Tontine Skins in 2016

You are all familiar with a "tontine" tipping contest, where you are required to tip one winner each round, and if you fail you drop out, until one tipster is left. This new tipping contest I invented takes that concept to a new level. I call it.....

    Tontine Skins

    Here's how it works.

Each AFL round you will be required to select two teams you think will win.
If you pick a Unique Combination of teams (ie a combination of two teams that no one else has picked that Round), and both teams win, you get 3 points for that Round. If you pick a combination that someone else has picked that Round, and both teams win, you get 1 point. You get no points for any other result.

There are two ways to win the competition. Just like in a normal tontine competition, it is possible for someone to win the competition in Round 1!

First way to win - if you are the only tipster to score 3 points in any given Round, you have just won the competition! You may not be the only one that week that had a Unique Combination in your selections, but you were the only tipster with a Unique Combination that also picked two winners.
Second way to win - if no one has won by the first method of winning by the end of Round 23, the tipster with the most points wins.

The big advantage this type of competition has over traditional tipping, and a normal tontine tipping competition is, you are never out of the competition. You are never so far behind you can't win, and you are never booted out for having one bad/unlucky pick. You can be coming dead last, and win the competition in the very next round. What you can find happening towards the end of the season is, those up near the lead on points start to tip a bit safer, trying to preserve their point lead, and just making sure they get at least one point for the week. Those 4 or 5 points behind throw in one rough pick, and one safe pick, trying to snare at least 1 point, but hopefully 3 points, and those at the back of the field throw in some wild picks, just trying to make sure they have a Unique Combination, and an outside chance to "steal" the prize.

When I ran it a few years ago we had 15 participants, and the prize went off 3 or 4 times each season. The first year each participant put in $20 at the start of each competition. Winner take all. When someone won, we reloaded another $20 each, and started again. The second year each participant put in $115 for the whole season. The idea being that each round $5 per tipster was added to the prize pool. Someone won in Round 4, and collected $300, we reset, and started again. The next winner came in Round 13, and collected $675, and so it all reset, and we started again.

We could use either funding method. A one off fee at the start of each competition, or a season fee, that makes the prize grow, the longer someone takes to win it.

Ideally it is run with 12 to 20 participants. Any more, and it is too hard to get Unique Combinations, any less and there are probably too many Unique Combinations in any given week, and the prize pool is also too small. You can actually get around a smaller group by limiting the number of games available for tipsters to try and pick winners each week. eg, just Saturday games etc.
I have thought about this on a larger, and a very large scale. As in, what would you do if you had 200 participants? Or, in some crazy World, where someone like the Herald-Sun ran with it, if you had 20,000 participants? I have actually come up with playable game rules/models for those situations. I don't think we are likely to have that problem here though.

    The Rules
The rules would be simple enough.
Tips in by an agreed time - 1 hour before the first bounce of game one in that round is what we used. This was so everybody could see before the first bounce, who had what Unique Combinations.
You have to be Financial to participate - that seems obvious
No changing tips once the one hour before first bounce has passed. - once again, obvious.
Default tips if you miss getting your tips in - this can be simple or complicated. I hate tipping contests that punish people too much for not getting their tips in. In the first season, we had a set default. You got the two teams highest up the ladder that were playing at home that week. We also made it a rule, if you were the only one who hadn't put your tips in, and the default rules happened to give you a Unique Combination, you were still only able to score 1 point that week, and not "steal" the prize. The second season we allowed people to select there own default rules, as long as they weren't complicated. Something along the lines of - If I don't put my tips in, give me the favourite in games 4 and 5 (as listed by the TAB - due to potential bye weeks, you had to pick 2 numbers under 6, or specify "the last game" or "second last game" . The rules lasted all season long, and once again you were not allowed to score 3 points, or steal the prize with default tips. You were limited to 1 point or no points that week. If you like the idea of the pool jackpotting, you can stipulate that those tipsters who had default tips in any given round can't "steal" the prize that week, but if they ended up with a Unique Combination, and two winners, they can block/stop another tipster from stealing the prize that week. A small detail we can agree upon later.

It can be very tactical. Some weeks people ended up with Unique Combinations picking two teams that were short favourites. Everyone had picked one or the other, but only one person picked both. You can get a feel for the type of tips a certain contestant might put in, so you can read your opponents, like you do in poker. Sometimes it works, and sometimes you wish you had just gone the obvious picks, and forgotten what everybody else might do. We did have one guy take the two most obvious teams, each and every week. He very rarely ended up with a Unique Combination, and he never won a prize.

    So is anyone interested?

If we get enough like minded people, we can get it up and running. It would be limited to SCS members only, of course!
    Prizemoney:
    Rnds 1-5 $15
    Rnds 6-10 $20
    Rnds 11-17 $25
    Rnds 18-23 $30
    Total $530
$20 towards running cost of the site.

If you are one of the participants, please like this post, so I know you have read it.

I will PM my tips to one of Philzsay, Impromptu or Goodies Guns by Tuesday morning each week. This is for proof of impartiallity, and to show I'm not reading your tips before entering my own. If you are going on holidays, or have need to do it, you can enter your tips a few weeks in advance.

You will all PM me your tips before the bounce of the first game each round, where the Round will then lock out. You can change your tips as often as you like before lockout, but obviously not after lockout.

With your first set of tips only, you are to include your default tips. These will set what your tips will be, if you fail to lodge tips that week before the lockout. Your default tips will take the following form:
Nominate 3 teams, in your preferential order, choosing three teams that have different byes.
The bye Groups are in the banner for your ease of viewing. As an example, you might nominate: WC, Coll, Syd. If you fail to enter your tips before the lockout, your tips will be WC & Coll that week, unless they play each other, or one of them has the bye, then your tips will become WC & Syd or Coll & Syd, depending on the circumstances. If you need this clarified, please ask. If two of you enter the same set of default teams, I will pm you both, to see if one will change. I will publish everyones default teams with the first round of tips.

Once the round has locked out, I will post everyone's tips, so you can see who has Unique Combinations, and a chance to win the pool that week.

If you have not submitted your tips, you can still get 3 points from your default tips that week, BUT YOU CANNOT WIN THE JACKPOT WITH DEFAULT TIPS! You must have submitted your tips that week to collect the jackpot.

For the sake of clarity, a draw in any game counts as both teams LOSING. As does any cancelled game, or non-resulted game, as deemed by the AFL.

Any prizes won will be paid out at the end of the season, along with the Cash League prizes.

While money is involved, we are not playing for sheep stations, and while we will play within the rules, let's also have some fun.

This year, instead of choosing 2 winners from 9 games, you are choosing 2 RESULTS from 5 games.

The round for Tontine Skins starts with the first Saturday game each week. This allows us to have a later lock out, and gives you that little bit of extra time to get your tips in. You also don't have to worry about forgetting your tips on those pesky Thursday games.

You choose 2 games from the list of 5, then you need to choose from the following options:

Home team to win by 20+
Either team to win by 1-19 or to draw
Away team to win by 20+

The idea of dropping the contest to 5 games, with choice brackets, is to reduce the number of Unique Combinations each week.
Last year with 21 contestant we averaged 14 UC's each week. If we can reduce that 9 or 10 UC's each week, I am confident we can see the Jackpot won 2 or 3 times each season.

So as an example you might tip:
    St Kilda 20+, Haw/Coll 0-19

    The Round 7 games are:
    Western Bulldogs v Gold Coast
    Essendon v Hawthorn
    West Coast v Port Adelaide
    Sydney v North Melbourne
    Adelaide v Carlton

    The Round 8 games are:
    GWS Giants v West Coast
    Carlton v Essendon
    Gold Coast v Melbourne
    Port Adelaide v Adelaide
    Western Bulldogs v Brisbane

    The Round 9 games are:
    North Melbourne v GWS Giants
    Gold Coast v Port Adelaide
    Essendon v Geelong
    Sydney v Fremantle
    St Kilda v Collingwood

Also confirming that Rowsus will PM me his tips before opening the comp each week like he has done every other year. It's my favourite pm of the week seeing what strategy he has gone for this time!!

Plus if you are going overseas/away at any time and want to send a couple of weeks of tips in advance you can always PM them to myself, and I will forward them onto Rowsus each week once he has sent me his.
