Stokes, Nortje, Curran, Hasaranga - will IPL teams release the big names?
With the mega auction in 2025, when squads will be revamped, franchises might look to release some big names this year to make room for a larger purse

IPL franchises have till November 26 to announce their final list of retentions ahead of the 2024 player auction, which will be held in Dubai on December 19. Two key factors that franchises will consider before finalising the list of retained and released players are: the new names available for bidding, and the mega auction ahead of the 2025 season, where squads will be revamped.

Franchises are keen to bid both for successful young talents at the recent World Cup - such as Rachin Ravindra, Gerald Coetzee, Travis Head and Azmatullah Omarzai - as well as experienced hands like Mitchell Starc, Chris Woakes and Pat Cummins. Some of these names are bound to attract massive bids, a common theme at mini auctions. However, the franchises will need a strong purse at the auction, which they can bolster only by releasing players who were bought at big prices in the last two years.

With the mega auction scheduled ahead of IPL 2025, franchises wouldn't mind releasing some big names with the option to buy back cheap either this time itself or a year later when a stronger purse will be available to them.

Here, we look at some significant names that the franchises will deliberate on in the lead up to retention day.

Punjab Kings - Sam Curran

At the last auction, Kings outbid five rivals to sign Curran for INR 18.5 crore (US$ 2.256 million approx.), thus making the England allrounder the most expensive player in the IPL. Curran, who was named the Player of the Tournament in England's victorious 2022 T20 World Cup campaign, was sought after for a number of reasons - his age (25), his ability to bat anywhere, his power-hitting against spin, his leadership skills, and, of course, his left-arm pace.

However, his returns in IPL 2023 were weak, as he managed just ten wickets in 14 matches at an average of nearly 49, and an economy of over ten. With the bat, Curran scored 276 runs at a strike rate of 136, and an average of over 27.

Along with the fresh purse of INR 5 crore, Kings will have more than INR 21 crore in case they release Curran. Also, they can release him keeping the option of buying him back before 2025 in mind.

Royal Challengers Bangalore - Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga

Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga were both bought for a handsome INR 10.75 crore in the 2022 and the 2023 auctions, respectively. Both were playing at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Royal Challengers' home base, for the first time. But both struggled at the ground with small boundaries.

Hasaranga, who missed the ODI World Cup to deal with a hamstring injury, played in just eight of the 14 matches last season, picking nine wickets at an economy of nearly nine. In the home matches, Hasaranga had just four wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 8.76.

Harshal, who was a part of the 2022 T20 World Cup squad but did not feature in a single game, just missed one match last season. He picked up 14 wickets at an economy of 9.65. While Harshal had succeeded with his variations at the death in his first two seasons - played in the UAE and in Mumbai - he became predictable in Bengaluru. He played all the seven home matches, but managed just nine wickets at 9.65.

As a result, Andy Flower, Royal Challengers' newly-appointed coach, might consider releasing both players and buying them back at lower prices.

Mumbai Indians - Jofra Archer

The stress fracture in the elbow, which has kept Archer out for the majority of the past two years, resurfaced midway into the ODI World Cup, where he was travelling as a reserve for England. Archer was sent back home, ruled out of the white-ball series in December in the West Indies, and there is no definitive timeline on his return.

Mumbai surprised everybody at the 2022 mega auction by picking Archer, who was not ready to bowl. After being entirely absent in the first season, Archer played just four matches in 2023 season before heading home after a recurrence of the elbow injury. Do Mumbai continue to show patience, and hope Archer turns up during the 2024 IPL, or do they find a replacement and retain him ahead of the 2025 mega auction?

Delhi Capitals - Anrich Nortje

Another player who has been hindered by injuries for a significant period of time is Nortje, who was retained by Capitals in 2022 for INR 6.5 crore. Able to bowl an entire over at 150kph, Nortje had recovered from a groin injury earlier in the year to play ten matches for Capitals in the 2023 season before heading home for personal reasons.

While he played the inaugural season of Major League Cricket in the USA, he aborted the ODI series at home against Australia in September following suspected stress fracture in the back, and was eventually also ruled out of the ODI World Cup. While ESPNcricinfo has learned that Nortje is doubtful for the SA20 (starting January 10), there is no update yet from CSA on when the fast bowler will be back.

Chennai Super Kings - Ben Stokes

By deciding to opt out of the 2024 season, Stokes has presented Super Kings with a simple decision to make. They bought Stokes in the 2023 auction for INR 16.25 crore, making him their most expensive auction buy ever. The risk of not releasing Stokes in an attempt to retain him ahead of the 2025 mega auction is huge. If they do not release Stokes, Super Kings will have a lighter purse at the upcoming auction.

Kolkata Knight Riders - Lockie Ferguson

Ferguson returned to Knight Riders last season after they traded him in from Gujarat Titans. Knight Riders paid INR 10.75 crore to Titans, who had shelled out a similar amount to get Ferguson in the 2022 auction. However, Ferguson, who can spear 150-plus deliveries at ease in all three phases of an innings, could only play three matches last season, where he was hampered by a hamstring injury. Recently, Ferguson bravely played the ODI World Cup while dealing with Achilles' injury throughout, which will also keep him out of the Plunket Shield.

Knight Riders could fancy releasing Ferguson to strengthen their purse, which would allow them to look at other options in 2024.

Explained: How Mumbai Indians used Cameron Green to trade in Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans

Hardik Pandya's annual salary is INR 15 crore and MI would've had to pay GT at least that amount to secure his services. However, after the retention list was announced, MI's purse amount was just INR 15.25 crore.

If they had just brought back Pandya, they would've had to go into the IPL 2024 auction with just 25 lakhs in their kitty which would be far from enough to build a complete squad.

So, MI ended up making the decision to let go of Cameron Green who scored 452 runs in 16 innings last season including a century. Green cost MI a whopping INR 17.5 crores in last year's auction and his exit would help them bring back Pandya and slightly bump their auction purse.

RCB, who had a huge purse of INR 40.75 crores, were the perfect candidates to bring Green in. The Bengaluru-based franchise has always had strong batting lineup and Green was an attractive propostion for them to join the likes of Kohli and Maxwell.

As a result, RCB's IPL 2024 auction purse came down to INR 23.25 crores while MI's purse went up to INR 32.75 crores (15.25+17.5).

The next step was for MI to bring in Pandya from GT for a cash deal which would increase GT's purse by INR 15 crores, which is Pandya's league worth (or salary). This would also reduce MI's purse to INR 17.75 crores while increasing GT's purse to INR 28.10 crores.

However, in addition to this, MI will also pay GT a transfer fee from which Pandya would stand to earn about 50% of the amount, as per a report from ESPNCricinfo. The report also states that this particular amount will be disclosed to IPL governing body by GT.

n the end, MI are happy that they got in an Indian all-rounder and a proven performer who could take over the franchise's leadership from Rohit Sharma, in the future if not now.

RCB have yet another superstar in their batting lineup and still enough cash to build a decent bowling lineup.

GT have got a good cash for Pandya and have burgeoned their auction purse to bring in other stars ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

Based on this information conveyed to the franchises ahead of the IPL auction in Dubai on Tuesday (December 19), the Australian, South African, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and West Indies boards have made their players available fully, with minor or no riders. However, England, Ireland, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh boards have given conditional approval.

Most Australian players will be available for the IPL, except Josh Hazlewood, who will participate in the league only from the first week of May. Cricket Australia (CA) has informed the BCCI that its players will be fully available, except for Hazlewood, and those playing in the final of the Sheffield Shield. The CA has assured the BCCI that all players will be available unless injured. Regarding the Sheffield Shield final, players have the option to choose IPL over the domestic event, which takes place from March 21 to 25.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said its players can participate in the league unless unfit or have international duties. The availability of English players is subject to the ECB's summer international program surrounding the Twenty20 World Cup, which is yet to be finalized. Rehan Ahmed has withdrawn from the auction. The Twenty20 World Cup is from June 4 to 30 in the Caribbean and the US.

Elsewhere, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Cricket Ireland (CI) have made their players available only partially, but special permissions have been granted to Mustafizur Rahman and Joshua Little. While the Ireland pacer has been permitted to take part in the league fully, the BCB has stated that Rahman can participate in the league from March 22 to May 11.

Sri Lanka has the scheduled second (and last) Test against Bangladesh from March 30 to April 3, which raises questions about the availability of some Sri Lankan players. However, Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, and Dushmantha Chameera will be available for the full duration of the IPL, as they do not participate in the Test format.

The BCB has also informed the BCCI that "Taskin Ahmed and Md. Shoriful Islam, who have been listed for the auction, will not be available for the IPL 2024 edition." Only three Bangladesh players (including Rahman) had featured in the auction register from Bangladesh.
Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), Cricket West Indies (CWI), Cricket South Africa (CSA), New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) have informed the BCCI that their players will be available for the entire duration of the IPL.

haha Punjab bid on the wrong Shashank Singh
‘Don’t see that’: IPL auction ‘drama’ as team bizarrely bids on wrong player... then tries to reverse it

As part of a marathon IPL auction, there were a bizarre moment of ... well, mistaken identity.

During the accelerated round, Punjab Kings appeared to accidentally bid for Shashank Singh. Shashank’s name was called out for a base price of 20 Lakhs before Punjab raised its paddle.

But when the hammer went down and the next player was set to be announced, Punjab co-owners Ness Wadia and Preity Zint seemed to be discussing that they’d made a mistake and wanted to withdrawal their bid.

uctioneer Mallika Sagar however stood her ground and said they had to keep Shashank under auction rules.

“The hammer has come down now,” Sagar told Zinta and Wadia.

If any team completes a bid, under auction rules they are required take that player and can’t withdrawal it once the hammer has gone down.

Shashank, a 32-year old who plays for Chattisgarh in domestic cricket, went unsold last year in the auction after being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The mix up might’ve happened due to the fact that were two players named Shashank Singh in the auction shortlist.

The other is a 20-year old uncapped batsman from Bengal with no previous IPL experience, while Punjab went on a spending spree during the accelerated round in a bid to fill up its spots.

As to be expected, the blunder prompted some reaction from the cricket world.

“We don’t see that in the auction if you are clear with your plans,” commentator Suhail Chandok said on Jio Cinema.

Former New Zealand national coach Mike Hesson, who was appearing as an expert on the program, added of Punjab: “Not sure what Punjab achieved from this IPL auction. They have a lot of backups but not a lot of substance.”

Kolkata Knight Riders

Squad strength: 23 (overseas 8)

Players bought: Mitchell Starc (INR 24.75 crore), Mujeeb Ur Rahman (INR 2 crore), Sherfane Rutherford (INR 1.5 crore), Gus Atkinson (INR 1 crore), KS Bharat (INR 50 lakh), Chetan Sakariya (INR 50 lakh), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (INR 20 lakh), Ramandeep Singh (INR 20 lakh), Manish Pandey (INR 50 lakh), Sakib Hussain (INR 20 lakh)

The wins: Knight Riders needed fast bowlers and they acquired Mitchell Starc for an all-time high of INR 24.75 crore. Towards the end, they also snapped up Gus Atkinson. In Mujeeb Ur Rahman and KS Bharat, they got a back-up spinner and a back-up wicketkeeper.

The misses: They rely a lot on Gurbaz coming good. Atkinson may not fit into the first-choice XI, and their Indian seamers lack experience. They also seem to be lacking the batting depth; Ramandeep Singh scored 127 runs at a strike rate of 222.80 in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but is unproven at this IPL.

Full squad
  • Openers: Jason Roy, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Venkatesh Iyer, Angkrish Raghuvanshi
  • Middle order: Shreyas Iyer (capt), Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, KS Bharat (wk), Manish Pandey, Sherfane Rutherford
